this is turning out to be a very enjoyable series. the one caveat is that the coincidence and inter related connections with one or the other of the leading characters still permeates the series... and it really isn't a necessary element. The characters are interesting enough without this added element and sometimes it seems to just be a device to bring hem strongly into the mystery at hand. It is just not necessary to tie the main characters into every mystery like this. they are detectives...not partners in the same force, but related forces... one state police and one FBI...and could be drawn into the story line in other ways... but no... it has to be because it happens to them or to someone related to them... and this is a crutch that you see often in comic book relationships...such as the leader of one super group turns out to be the long lost father of a character in the main superdoop group... it's just not necessary for the story line or the interaction between the different elements of the story. This is my main problem with what would otherwise be a very enjoyable series. I am reading the third book in the series now and , once again, this connection thing pops up ... so it would seem to be a plot device the author simply cannot do without. I hope sh grows out of it.

Stand-alone book to read. An incident from the past haunts one person into killing now because of their guilt. Known as the bridge killer but why do bridges play an important part of the killings? FBI Agent Ava McLean and Detective Mason Callahan are consumed into investigating the murders in the City Of Portland. What is the connection between these killings?
There is strength, trust, and respect between Ava and Mason. Though each has a demanding job, they have a balance between work and their life at home. No one is on an ego trip due to their job.
However, Ava has a twin sister Jayne who is her downfall. Mason is Ava’s voice of love and reason but Ava just cannot give up on her sister. How is Jayne involved with the killings, if at all?
The story develops piece-by-piece and character-by-character pulling you into reading more of the book. What is their reason behind the murders? Twists toward the end of the book cause a rise in anxiety pushing for the urgency to solve the murders.
Ms. Elliot has a unique style she manages to tie the agents into the stories. In this one, Ava becomes a part of the story, much to Mason's ire. This plot device shows the depth of their love.
I'm not a big fan of how Ms. Elliot writes the "romantic" part of the book(s); they're too scripted, too stiff. I've often thought how much better her books would be without that element in them, but I do like the love these two characters have for each other.
My suggestion to fans of Kendra Elliott is to read "Vanished" (Callahan & McLane Book 1) first because jumping into their relationship as it matures misses much of the important detail about how it came to be as it was formed. The personalities of Callahan and separately McLane are intense, well delineated, filled with anticipation and hope as they work through their dramas as driven by a new and thrilling case. To understand the depth of the characters that are brought forward in this sequel, it is helpful to understand not just their own situations but those that surround them and those are founded in "Vanished" (Book 1). Many of us in our lives know that tension, stress with intensity from threatening circumstances can make or break trust and emotion. Kendra Elliott brings all of that to a fine and intense point in "Bridged" making the conclusion a "can't put it down" page turner!
Kendra is a great writer. She has a way of engaging the reader quickly without being predictable. Personally, I greatly enjoy serial character books that have an easy flow from one book to the other without being too redundant in rehashing what happened in prior books. In the rare occasion I skip a book, Ms. Scott also doesn't write spoilers that take the fun out of reading the skipped book. (Although I encourage you to read them in order!) She develops plots that are interesting and complex enough to keep me interested. The chemistry between McLane and Callahan is interesting without being sappy or explicit. And the dynamic between the McLane twins provides a good experience of unpredictable psychological drama. And I look forward to more development of the sidekick partners of Ray and Lander. Great Writer, great read, great series!
In this second book in a series, FBI Agent Ava McLane and Oregon State Police detective Mason Callahan are living together, more or less. Ava hasn't sold her home but she's leaning that way. Both of them fit together like they were made for each other. Mason is a little concerned about their age difference and Ava is still plagued by her irresponsible drug addict of a sister. But both are happier than they can ever remember being.
This time they both get called in on the death of a congressman. He was found hanging from a bridge. Ava and Mason are busy investigating when two more men are found hanging from bridges. With thoughts of a serial killer, the press is clamoring for details. Ava, Mason and the Task Force are trying to find something that connects these seemingly very different men. And, somehow, Ava's sister Jayne is caught up in the case since her current, shady boyfriend seems to be on the killer's radar.
The story is very suspenseful. I also liked the relationship that Ava and Mason are building. Sections from the killer's point of view add an extra creepiness to the story too. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this story.
